Poole Pottery Broadstone

We often get asked by our clients to tell them how to differentiate between two of the most popular of Poole Pottery's discontinued ranges: Parkstone and Broadstone. In general terms Parkstone has an off-white background with obvious grey speckling. Broadstone has a background that is more of a sandy yellow with less pronounced speckling. The problem is not helped by the fact that the depth of the colouring in the Broadstone seemed to vary slightly with nearly every firing. In fact one worker told me that it could even vary in the same firing, depending upon the position of the item in the kiln. Have a good look at the photographs in our web pages showing Broadstone and Parkstone - hopefully this will help.

At Replace Your China we have just obtained a further supply of Poole Pottery Broadstone including some dinner plates, which are always difficult to obtain. Although, unavoidably, all of these items have been previously owned, they are all in excellent condition and will grace any table setting.

Denby Pottery Arabesque - Fresh Stock

I am delighted to announce that we have managed to obtain another consignment of Denby Pottery Arabesque in really good condition. Although we have had a small amount in stock, we have been struggling to find additional items in good enough condition to purchase. I think we had rejected the previous three consignments because when we viewed them they just were not good enough. While accepting that all Denby Arabesque that we purchase at Replace Your China is now of some age and has been previously owned, we still stick to our guiding principle in such matters. The tableware must be of a condition that we would be happy to display on our own table, in the presence of guests. Based upon the flattering feedback that we get, that guide line seems to work for 99.99% of our clients.

Denby Pottery Midnight

One of the most popular of Denby Pottery's tableware ranges in recent years must be "Midnight".

To some extent it is reminiscent of some of the earlier Denby Pottery ranges that had frequently had rich and attractive blue colouring in them. Once again the background to Midnight is a rich and vibrant blue but the colouring is broken cleverly up with an understated coloured pattern. Also of course the shapes have been modernised to suit contemporary kitchen fashions.

Because of its popularity, we are seldom able to offer Midnight to our clients. Although it was manufactured and sold in large quantities during its production run, those fortunate people who own this pattern, do not often seem want to part with it, so we have great difficulty in locating in on the previously owned market.

Royal Doulton Autumn's Glory

There are some patterns of tableware that stand out to me as being likely to survive the test of time, by still being popular when household fashions change. One such pattern is the Autumn's Glory range manufactured by Royal Doulton.

The production of Autumn's Glory ceased many years ago and I know that if I had been involved in that decision, I would have been recommending its continuance. However, I guess that Royal Doulton had enough problems without having the added encumbrance of having me on the senior management team.

It had a pattern of fresh looking fruit and leaves on a plain white background, all showing on attractively shaped tableware with a practical and user friendly glaze. I do not know how many years it was produced for, but I suspect that it was fewer years than many patterns, because it seldom becomes available to us in good condition. Or perhaps the problem is that those lucky people who have this range, just cannot bear to part with it, so none becomes available on the "previously owned" market. You may have guessed: I quite like this pattern.

Selling Your Tableware

I thought it might be worth offering a couple of tips that might guide clients in the right direction if they are trying to sell tableware to a replacement service such as ours.

Firstly, have a critical look at the items that you wish to sell. Most replacement services will only purchase items that are in perfect condition. It is no good telling the prospective buyer that your set is in perfect "as new" condition, when it is not. When they examine it, they will simply reject it and you are back to square one. So make a list of all the items that you have, and then put a note next to each item to indicate its condition. Then if any offer is made by the replacement service, it is likely that they will stick to that offer when they receive the items.

The other thing that is worth mentioning in your initial communication with the prospective buyer, is the general location that the items are currently stored. As with several of the major replacement services, staff from Replace Your China usually collect any items that we agree to buy, so before we make any decision as to the purchase, we need to know where the collection will need to be made from.

The other seemingly obvious point to communicate is the name of the manufacturer and pattern that you are trying to sell. It might seem obvious but you would be amazed at how often those details are not included.

Replacement Rubber Seals for Hornsea Pottery Storage Jars

There are few things more annoying than having a perfectly good storage jar, which has become unusable simply because the rubber seal has deteriorated. This is a challenge that has faced thousands of users of some of the most popular storage jar ranges produced by Hornsea Pottery.

Hornsea Pottery patterns such as Heirloom, Fleur, Tapestry, Bronte and Saffron storage jars were all of the same shape and used the same seals to make the lids airtight. When you consider just how many years it is since these items were first manufactured, it is hardly surprising that many of the original seals have deteriorated to such an extent that the jars are no longer air tight.

After much searching, we are pleased to report that we are now able to supply the seals for this range of jars. Please note that as far as we know the seals that we provide do not fit any other jars, so if you have a Hornsea jar that is a different shape than the above patterns, or if your jar is from a different manufacturer, please do not purchase these seals from us. If we manage to locate appropriate seals for other makes and patterns of storage jars, we will make them available in the future.

MARKS AND SPENCER HARVEST TABLEWARE

Harvest tableware from Marks and Spencer was discontinued many years ago, yet this attractive pattern still remains very popular and is one of our best sellers, when we are able to find suitable items. I suppose it has a pattern that is attractive without being too "in your face", so you do not get fed up with it. Harvest also has the advantage of being very hard wearing which makes it ideal for use as a family everday tableware set.

We have just been fortunate in obtaining a large quantity of the Marks and Spencer Harvest pattern, including some quite rare pieces.
