JOHNSON BROS, ETERNAL BEAU

Eternal Beau is probably one of the most readily recognised of all of the hundreds of tableware patterns produced by Johnson Brothers. Its octagonal shape was a trend setter in its day and I can still remember how several of my elderly relations stocked up on it and thought it was wonderful. 

Unfortunately, Johnson Bros (or Wedgwood who took over Johnson Bros) discontinued the range many years ago and it is now difficult to find items that are in good condition. They particularly seemed to suffer from chips to the underside of the corners of the plates - I suspect they got bashed against taps when being washed up.

POOLE POTTERY STONEWARE ANIMALS AND BIRDS

As time goes by some aspects of an existing website need to be changed. We have just obtained quite a large quantity of Poole Pottery stoneware animals and birds and will be adding them to the website over the next week or so. 

Previously these stoneware items, mostly designed by Barbara Linley-Adams were listed with our Poole Pottery Decorative Items, but that list has now become too long and unwieldy so we have started a new sub-category headed "POOLE POTTERY STONEWARE ANIMALS AND BIRDS " to make it easier for collectors to see which of these items are currently available. 

For the same reason we will also be adding new sub-category listings for the highly collectable Poole Pottery stoneware plates and the Poole Pottery Dolphin Blue animals.

ROYAL ALBERT OLD COUNTRY ROSES

Even after all these years in the discontinued tableware business, it is amazing how often I come across an item that I have not seen before. It happened this week when I bought a large quantity of Royal Albert Old Country Roses. Sadly, many of the items turned out to be "seconds" (in fairness Royal Albert seconds are often better than the first quality items produced by modern manufacturers), but at least they were all made in England as opposed to foreign versions often seen. 

In amongst this mixed lot of Old Country Roses, I found this little knife. It is just under 5.5" in length and I can only imagine that it was produced as a butter knife, although I suspect that some knowledgeable reader may correct me on that. It is always fascinating to find something new to me.

POOLE POTTERY STONEWARE

WREN ON STUMP

Poole Pottery produced many stoneware sculptures of animals and birds, most of them lovingly designed by Barbara Linley-Adams.  The wren on the stump is a model that is particularaly sought after by collectors, because it was only produced by Poole Pottery in 1972. The pottery had received feedback from customers and also staff, that the design was a little top heavy and very prone to being knocked over and damaged. The model was therefore redesigned to show the wren sitting on an apple. As a result not many of the original wrens were produced and many collectors do not have this particular item.

Poole Pottery Puffin in Dolphin Blue Glaze

This lovely puffin was designed and modelled for Poole Pottery by Barbara Linley Adams and glazed in Dolphin Blue. It was one of the early designs that Barbara produced for the factory in this range of animals and birds. The puffin stands just under 4" tall.  It was only produced between 1989 and 1995 and is extemely rare and much sought after.

Selling Your Tableware

Selling Tableware

Many clients approach me to ask if we buy tableware, or just sell it.

Simple answer really. If we did not buy, we would have nothng to sell.

If you have china or pottery tableware which you wish to sell, tell us about it, either by telephone or by email. However, bear in mind that we will only purchase items that are in virtually "as new" condition. Items that are scratched, chipped, crazed, cracked, worn or faded will not be accepted. Some other dealers might be interested in selling worn out items, but I have built a business reputation by only dealing in quality products. My rule of thumb has always been that the items that we eventually offer for sale must be of such quality that I would be happy to use them on my own table in the presence of guests - even when the mother in law comes to visit.

The other things that you need to tell us when offering items for sale are:

1 Manufacturer's name, (eg Poole Pottery, Denby, Royal Doulton, Hornsea, Johnson Bros or whatever).

2 Pattern name. Often this is shown on the reverse of the item, or sometimes just a pattern code (often a combination of letters and numbers) is shown. If you cannot find either of these types of identification, include a photograph of a sample item.

3 We usually collect items from you, if we agree a purchase price, so tell us what area the items will need to be collected from.

Once I have received the above information, I will contact you to let you know if we are intersted in purchasing the items, and what price we are able to offer. If you accept our offer, we will then arrange to collect the items from you at a mutally convenient time and date.

It really is as simple as that.

Poole Pottery Summer Glory

Summer Glory was produced by Poole Pottery in the 1970's and 1980's, It was part of Poole Pottery's Style range, together with the popular Sprintime pattern. The range was designed by Robert Jefferson and was certainly very popular.
Many years after production ceased, Summer Glory is still much sought after by many of our customers who are still using it on a daily basis. We are delighted to have managed to obtain a quanity of items including the scarce dinner plates, in very good condition.

Royal Doulton, Strawberry Cream

Royal Doulton, Strawberry Cream

The nature of sourcing discontinued tableware is that the most requested patterns are often the ones that we can find most easily. I have always assumed that this is because those are the patterns that were produced in greatest quantities (in order to satisfy the initial demand) and that therefore there is a greater reservoir available of previously owned pieces.

Royal Doulton Strawberry Cream is one of the patterns that seems to defy that logic. We are often asked for it but we seldom manage to locate it. Perhaps the production run was shorter than with many other Royal Doulton tableware patterns.

Whatever the reason, Strawberry Cream is very difficult to find. We are therefore delighted to be able to offer our clients a small selection of this discontinued pattern, in very good condition.

HORNSEA POTTERY CORNROSE

Hornsea Pottery produced the Cornrose pattern from 1978 to 1986. The range of items produced was very extensive and the fully vitrified product became extremely popular. The pattern of cornrose poppies was, and still is, very attractive, and this was combined with a glaze that was long lasting and wear resistant. Many of the items that we now stock, look to be brand new, which is quite remarkable when you consider that they are at least 25 years old.

Poole Pottery Fresco

Fresco was introduced by Poole Pottery in 1997. It's hand painted, brushed slip look became instantly popular. It was designed by Rachel Barker and Andrew Brickett. Customers were able to choose from a variety of rim colours including terracotta, yellow, blue and green. Many admirers plumped for a mixture of the colours.

The production run of Fresco was relatively short and many people were unable to complete their collections before new items became unobtainable. We seldom seem to get the opportunity to offer these items to our clients and are delighted to have some in stock at this time.
